Tetris Wouldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Might Solve This

Whenever a major honors show draws close, there’s always an outcry for introducing additional classifications to acknowledge unsung work and delight the spirits of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

My colleague has already made for a horror game category. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are tabletop games, which is someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize since similar to blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand remains most pressing above others. The demand is this: We need a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and it will always generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason movie academies avoid this approach. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise for the industry of video games, showing incredible range they barely qualify one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications actually cover a lot of ground, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, all very different: building puzzles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated completely that year
  • Another imaginative release was excluded during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked in 2021
  • Just some brain-teasers managed to sneak into niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent modest productions, however the design in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among the most-played games globally continuing this trend for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience rivals famous sandbox experiences claiming status as most purchased experience; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and engaging with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. You could fill a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these are games that otherwise have no home in important events. Logic title developers are working at the challenging frontier of video game design, creating some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Just like film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait 35 years.
