British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a coordinated attack against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, identified by reconnaissance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was situated in mountainous terrain just above the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a number of access tunnels down to the depot... preliminary assessments indicate the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the operation on Saturday evening and each participating jet made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - also known as the so-called Islamic State - established jihadist rule over parts of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation demonstrates the UK's leading role, and commitment to operate in unison with our allies, to stamp out any resurgence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

RAF aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of Islamic State subsequent to its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank every member of our armed forces involved in this mission for their professionalism and their courage," Healey added. "Including them were thousands of UK service members on duty over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to remove terrorist threats who pose a risk to our safety, demonstrates how British military are ready to step up, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure within its borders and powerful internationally."

During December, the American forces conducted what it termed a "massive strike" against IS targets in the country, subsequent to an attack claimed the lives of two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates Daesh still has roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in both countries.
