The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted figures who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.
